LIVE AUCTION PREVIEW: "La'ila'i" Original Acrylic and Gold Leaf by Heidi Buscher
"La'ila'i" is a 40" x 22" original acrylic and gold leaf on canvas piece created by Heidi Buscher, a renowned artist and beloved Parker School art teacher. This painting is part of a series that aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia and connection to people and places that came before us, and is inspired by mythology and storytelling. The work specifically references the Hawaiian creation chant, the Kumulipo, which speaks of La'ila'i as the first human being and progenitor of the Hawaiian race.

The painting itself is a portrait of La'ila'i, rendered in expressive and bold brushstrokes with a contemporary and abstract twist. The use of gold leaf on the canvas adds depth and texture to the piece, and reflects the reverence and importance of La'ila'i in Hawaiian culture. The color palette is earthy and warm, reminiscent of the natural beauty of the Hawaiian islands, and the expressive mark-making brings a sense of movement and life to the painting. It is framed in a 2-inch deep, distressed dark walnut wood grain with antique gold inside lip and a 3-inch wide off-white linen scooped liner.

"La'ila'i" is a deeply moving and powerful work of art that pays homage to the history and culture of Hawaii, while also presenting a contemporary and expressive interpretation of that history, encouraging the viewer to reflect on their own connections to the past and the ways in which those connections continue to shape our present and future.
