Historic Bond Estate Tour
Boyd Bond will lead a private historic tour of the Historic Bond Estate in North Kohala. The Bond Historic District is a unique collection of historic buildings, and one of only two such sites in the world that represent an intact mission station from the 1800s. The mission station at 'Iole tells the tale of the struggle of the Hawaiian people to adjust to the changes in their island homeland and of the missionaries from New England who came to serve the people of Hawai'i. A group of ten (10) will receive a private two (2) hour tour, including a rare opportunity to enter the historic buildings and hear the history from a Bond family descendant. The tour will be followed by a catered healthy lunch on the property and talk story time with the hosts.

"Papaya" by Jo Ann Barbis
It is amazing how a beautifully simple painting of the lovely papaya can capture the feel of Hawai'i. This 13.5" x 13.5" alkyd oil (oil mixed with resin) painting on canvas by Jo Ann Barbis does just that. The papaya, resting on a croton leaf, practically invites you to take a bite. Notice that what appears to be a mat is actually tromp l'oeil. Barbis attended the University of California at Berkley where in 1955 she earned a bachelor of science degree in art. After moving to Sacramento in 1963, she continued her pursuit of art under Lida Giambastiani, Gary Pruner and Jim Estey, and at the University of California at Davis, With Dan Shapiro and Wayne Thiebaud. Barbis has many solo shows in Sacramento galleries, and since 1989 she has had five major solo shows at the Artists Contemporary Gallery and the Art Foundry Gallery. Her latest works express her new found “island lifestyle” as she and her husband moved part time to the Big Island in 2006.
